Hold Still

Interval
1. A period of time between events or states 2. A space between things. I was told the word Interval just when I was about to find myself in that weird space in between things. House, No house No plans. Instability. Exciting uncertainty. At the same time, I was commissioned to design the album Hold Still by the Norwegian musician Eirik Svela. His beautiful upcoming album is formed by a selection of songs written throughout his life. While talking about the key concepts behind this work, we talked about the special energy of those moments in between and the beauty of random meaningful encounters with people. As the famous quote says: “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” John Lennon. |
The photographs shown in here were taken for Eirik’s album on the last day that Maria Nieto and I moved out of our house and left with the last random few things we had left. We all agreed on the importance of genuine stories. With that in mind, I wanted to portray this particular moment in Maria’s life. I could tell you about it, but I’d prefer for you to listen to Hold Still and make up your own story about her journey.
Is she leaving or arriving? |
Something unexpected and wonderful happened while the photos were being taken. We were in this small countryside path, far from any village, when a man appeared in his car. He looked at us, smiled and asked if he could join. On another occasion I would have probably declined, as it was important for me to portray Maria’s moment. However, after the conversations about random encounters that, ultimately, make life so much more interesting, it felt right to accept Juan’s offer.
|
So, at the end, there are four life journey’s in this story: Eirik’s, Maria’s, Juan’s and mine. Four different lives that randomly have crossed paths to illustrate Hold Still.
|
Hold Still will be out on the 17th of November. Stay tuned, two singles are being released prior to that date.
|
I want to thank Eirik, Maria and Juan for sharing this moment in their journeys with us.
